Must See TV

General Electric (the people who own NBC) has proudly formulated a new product: The Patient Channel. Conceived by GE Medical Systems, this is a private television network fed directly to patients in their hospital beds. The network, which GE expects to prescribe to 1,100 hospitals in its first year, administers a major dose of health information, product promotion and pharmaceutical ads. All costs of the service are fully cared for by drug and medical services companies. "The one place you couldn't get good health information was in the hospital," says Bruce Dean, an internist and managing editor of the service. "Now there are smarter patients and better patients."
