(God's) Country First

At first glance, you have to wonder what a photo of Sarah Palin signing one of those noxious "Country First" placards is doing leading this NYT background piece on her religion? In a brilliant piece of photo editing, however, The Times provides vivid warning of the fundamentalist merger of church and state, especially the military component.

As The Times relates, Palin tells the Assembly of God Church, as regards her sons deploying to Iraq, that:

[T]hey should pray “that our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God, that’s what we have to make sure we are praying for, that there is a plan, and that plan is God’s plan.”

Beyond the fabricated excuse for going to war, and the disastrous execution of it, the merger of the American will with God's reduces the conflict (the way the Administration grafted Hussein onto al-Qaeda) to a war of Christianity against Islam.  It's not that Bush in his heart felt anything different, but at least with Dubya, he was only the front man for a non-theologically driven neocon agenda.

The way Palin contacts that sign and wields that Sharpie around, however, we could be one McCain heart attack away from a defense strategy fundamentally designed to send the unwashed heathens to Kingdom come.

I love your blog. I've visited quite a bit lately...sprinkling in links to posts on my site in a cheezy attempt to get some free advertisement. But even in doing that I read your posts and I am definitely becoming a huge fan. I was visiting the this morning and there was a link to your site. I'm not sure if you're affiliated with them or not but...kudos to you for a listing on the #1 blog in cyberspace. At any cheezy freebies this morning. Just some info I thought I'd pass on. Apparently Palin billed State for Nights spent at home. Nooooo....this isn't a link to my It's an article that is available for viewing at the

ah...forgive me. after going back and reading the article I checked out the author. Nice to meet you Mr. Shaw.

There were already others, who went to war likewise: The belt-buckle of the Nazi-Wehrmacht showed a swastika and the words "Gott mit uns" (God with us). Remember the results!

"When fascism comes to America, it’ll be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross." -- Sinclair Lewis

"Catch-22 means that people have the right to do to you anything that you cannot prevent them from doing to you." ~ Joseph Heller

[1] Governor Palin, what is your position on Capital Punishment; ie., The Death Penalty?

[2] You have left no doubt that you fundamentally oppose abortion; You have endeavoured in that regard for many years? You have no doubt that abortion is tantamount to infanticide? That Roe -v- Wade should be over-turned by judicial process; ie., that abortion is a crime? What, then, in your judgement should be the sentence rendered to those women who have been convicted of the crime "abortion"? Capital Punishment; ie., Death? No? perhaps, then, Life In Prison? No? Some term of years, then ~ how many years, Governor?

[3] Millions of Americans live in "small towns"; millions live in Big Cities and suburbs. You have stated that you are proud of your "Small Town Values"... What does that mean; ie., What are "Small Town Values", Governor?

[4] Governor, what is a Homosexual-? Is he or she, "sick"; are they... dangerous? are they... criminals? Should we exclude them from serving in our Government? The U.S. Military, then? Teaching in our Universities and Schools? No? Should we allow them to attend our Universities and Schools? Preach at our churches and Temples? Governor, should we allow homosexuals to go to our hospitals? Should they be required to publicly display some sort of identification ~ a public notice ~ that they are homosexual or lesbian? Governor, should Americans report someone whom they suspect of being a homosexual or a lesbian to Federal authorties? Governor, should Americans allow homosexuals to vote?

[5] It is estimated that there are approximately ~20 million illegal resdents; ie., "aliens" or "illegal immigrants" ~ living and working in America. Governor, should we allow these people to collect social welfare benefits? to drive on our roads? to attend our universities and schools? to go to our hospitals? Governor, should Americans report some man, woman or child whom they suspect of being an illegal alien to Federal authorties?

[6] Most of us recently enjoyed watching the Olympics in Beijing. Even after extraordinary efforts by the Chinese government to improve their air quality, it was still startling to see to what extent the modern city of Beijing suffers from foul air and dirty water. Governor, where does this pollution come from? Is this pollution ~ of their air, of their water, of their soil etc., a threat to the United States? Would you consider pollution wrought upon our air, our water, or our soil by a foreign power to be an "attack" upon the United States?

[7] President Bush has recently made clear that he approves our military pursuit of insurgents in Pakistan; do you support this policy? Governor, fifteen of the 9/11 hijacker-attackers were from Saudi Arabia, two from the United Arab Emirates, one from Egypt, and one from Lebanon. Should the United States then pursue ~ militarily ~ these so-called "radical Islamists" in Saudi Arabia?

[8] Your son is shipping out to IRAQ today; I'm sure you are proud, as we all are, of our military service men and women. Governor, would you describe the presence of American military in IRAQ as an "occupation" of that country, or a "War"?

[9] Governor, why has America ~ for half a century now ~ failed to "win" the War On Drugs-?

[10] There is no question that pornography is prolific on the internet, freely accessible by anyone so inclined to read or view it from their personal computer. Governor, what should the government do to regulate these words and images... to regulate the internet, itself ?
