Candidate By Design

Morrispalin

I originally posted this shot back on September 16th.  With all the attention to Sarah Palin's wardrobe controversy, it seems particularly prescient now.  This photo was posted on the TIME White House photo blog back on September 3rd, the day of Palin's RNC convention speech.  The title and caption read:

"Closet Space: The dress worn by Sarah Palin at the announcement of her candidacy hangs in the shower on the campaign bus."

What the gifted photographer Christopher Morris seemed to pick up near instantly -- and now the rest of the population is finally also focusing on -- is how a politician like Sarah Palin comes mostly by design.  It's just too bad for (the bumbling but charming, over-confident, unselfconscious and non-introspective) Sarah that she came eight-years late to the party, dancing into an election in which the fundamental change sought by a weary and wary public is a sense of authenticity.

For the past eight years, America has suffered horribly under an actor outfitted in a Rove-tailored persona to play the C.I.C.  As a result, what is happening now is akin to pulling the curtain on the Wizard of Oz.  From whatever angle you want to examine Sarah Palin as being dressed up -- as a Super Mom, with a "family as entourage" rather than people working real jobs or attending school; as a feminist, who employs seductive gestural come-ons to curry favor; as a political outsider, but singularly focused on the inside game -- the blow-up over this megabuck wardrobe goes far beyond the exposure of a make-believe populist.

No, the real picture here is this...  Sarah Palin is whoever and whatever she wants us to believe.  It's outfit as metaphor.

Giant lapel pin, not to be outdone; looks like a big "S" wrapped around the flag doesn't it? Certainly dwarfs the blue star mother pin (which if I'm not mistaken, Todd Palin is wearing in some wire shots I've seen).

No mine-shaft gap, er, flag-pin gap for these simple middle Americans with $150K Saks credit-lines, no. They made such an issue with same for Obama, and of course he now sports a flag pin religiously. I have often visualized, well fantasized, Obama's moment of concession after the relentless rightwing talking points about flag pins gained so much traction that all the major media decided to write about it, day after day.

To wit: "if that's what it takes --expletive deleted--." Or so I figure.

Obviously, true patriots, or, just us Americans for that matter, don't need a symbol on their lapel to prove it. And while Obama now does, I've noticed McCain does not. This isn't McCain winning in lapel pin rationality and patriotism so much as --expletive deleted-- ruling the day. You don't see a lot of talk about flag pins anymore, but look who's not wearing one.

And not to completely belabor this, but what is with Palin's recent showings of a new pin, a polar bear?

As far as I know she's very in favor of killing polar bears should they stand between her and… some oil, a hot meal, global warming denial and so on.

The polar bear is the symbol of the Alaska Independence Party, and has been for some time.

For a girl who likes to wink, is it a wink?

We have heard plenty of crackpot baseless arguments about Obama the Manchurian Muslim that play to the paranoid base. I'm not going to go there and suggest that Palin is a Manchurian Alaskan secessionist (though, no doubt she can see Manchuria from her house and can also dance a fine little Manchurian shuffle--wink). Really, what is she communicating with that? Considering how much attention was bestowed on Obama and his --expletive deleted-- pin, it's obviously very important to Republicans exactly what pin (if any) sits on your breast. Well, what is she communicating? Someone should ask.

Funny, in a sick way, that the plot from The Manchurian Candidate, actually tracks a guy like McCain whereas it has little to do with Obama at all. There are Nam vets and families who have the worst things to say about McCain, yet they get zero airtime. I suppose I say ‘funny’ because of the way the Republican machine always attacks, nuclear style, their actual weakness and corruption. Shut down ACORN! VOTER FRAUD!

The next day, on page B25 we read: Republican voter registrar indicted, caught switching parties on registrants, McCain funded.

Have the ‘secret Muslim’ believers seen the flick? Probably not.

And to mix flicks:

General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, have you ever seen a Commie drink a glass of water?

This picture suggests a play on the "emperor's new clothes." In the tale, the emperor was real, the clothes were a delusion. People pretended the clothes were real. In this case, however, we see that the clothes are real, but the woman who wears them is a delusion--an empty suit who pins on her patriotism. That's all there is, folks; Why pretend that she is real?

Obama looks so much more appealing to Joe and Jane Six Pack in simple Taliban duds.

The thing that stands out to me about Sarah Palin is that I think she has worshiped at the church of Bush. She has watched him closely and taken copious notes. And she wears her W persona with such pride! I really don't think she knows what she's doing, or how most Americans loathe it. Like any good beauty pageant contestant, or indeed local television anchor, Palin is good at faking it, at mimicry. John McCain has, I think completely without intention, picked the one running mate who apes the Bush approach to politics in almost every way.

As for the above photo and the excellent commentary, I have just two words to add. Flight suit. I wonder if, compared to the cost of landing that jet on the USS Mission Accomplished, perhaps the $150,000 for Palin was a bargain.

After suffering through the Palin candidacy, we all need a long hot shower. And her rabid fans need a nice ice cold shower....

I love the cheesy plastic hanger - that speaks volumes about the lack of integrity inside the suit. The Made In China tacky flag brooch is another bit of tarnished tinsel meant to catch the eye and offer distraction.

I can't take credit for this. But the characterization fits to a "T" and seems tailor made for the circumstances. Too good not to share.

Frocks to Nowhere

I went back and looked at the original comments. Very different. Before it was,(among other things):cheesy, tacky, 'Ross and Rack' quality. Now it's empty suit and the emperor's new clothes. Our perception of Sarah Palin has changed; there has been A LOT of water under that bridge. I wonder who the last such polarizing figure has been (excluding, of course, the entire bush administration).

Joe the Plumber makes $44,000 a year. Palin spent more than three years of Joe's salary on clothes in three months. Ms. Main Street Hockey Mom spends a lot of time and money on Fifth Avenue.

This is for the Barrack Obama supporters.

First, I am a Christian and believe is not mine, nor anyone else’s, place to judge people. It is however, my place to help choose who I want to be President.

I think the government is to big, has too much power and should be drastically reduced. I know that we are losing our freedoms at am alarming rate. I have several friends that were born and raised in Europe and are now US citizens. They are shocked at how fast we are moving towards a European style Social Democracy.

Just a few questions.

Do you believe in censorship? Please just a simple yes or no.

Why are posts that question Barrack Obama’s past removed for left leaning Blogs?

Why do many newspaper and TV blogs censor questions about Barrack Obama’s past or are negative regarding Barrack Obama? Why are so many YouTube videos about Barrack Obama removed?

As you can see anti-Obama blogs do not censor you, they welcome all opinions.

What if Barrack Obama’s mother and Grandparents were Communist?
There is lots of evidence to suggest that. Would that affect your opinion of him?

By his own admission, Frank Marshall Davis was Barrack Obama’s was mentor. What do you know about him? Do 5 minutes of research then answer this question. Would let this man watch your kids? Why not?

As far as religion goes, answer this. By his own admission, Revered Wright taught Barrack Obama everything about being a Christian and was his spiritual mentor. What do you know about Black Liberation Theology? Five minutes of research.
Why did this “Christian/Black Liberation Theology” church give a lifetime achievement award to Nation Of Islam's Lois Farrakhan?

Why, as a sitting US Senator, did Barrack Obama travel to Kenya and campaign for his radical Muslim Cousin, Raila Amollo Odinga? Did you know that is against US Law? When Raila Amollo Odinga lost he incited riots and thousands of people were killed, Christian were burn in their Churches. Why did Barrack Obama support him? Is that a fair question?

If you look at the long list of people Barrack Obama has associated with since he was a child you will see a definite pattern. If you have kids would you allow them to hangout with a drug dealer? Bank robber? Terrorist? Gang-banger? Why not?

We all know why; the people you associate with, the books you read, the TV shows & movies you see, the video games you play, etc… will effect how you think!

If half of the information about Barrack Obama past is true would that affect your opinion? What if it is all true?

You are all smart people just do a few minutes of research.
Why is everything about Barrack Obama past a secret?

What if you are wrong?

*yawn*
